Computational Photonics

Photonics is an interdisciplinary science which deals with the interaction of light and matter. We approach this field from the viewpoint of scientific computing. Mathematically this means the numerical solution of Maxwell's equations as fundamental equations of electromagnetics.

The lecture has the following parts:

- overview of the essential simulation challenges in nano photonics,
- modeling of scattering problems on unbounded domains,
- overview of different solution strategies,
- finite element method: mesh generation, scalar and vectorial finite elements, hierarchical structures, applications.

All algorithms will be implemented based on given templates. Convergence studies will be performed.
